Peterson Protects Unbeaten Run

Howden AFC needed a late goal from wing back Rob Peterson who netted his second of the season in a dominant MinsterMen performance.
Nathan Munday and John Boardman made their first starts for the season as the home side looked to kick off their home campaign. Howden were aiming to build on three successive victories and carry on early season form.
Howden began sluggish and couldn't find their feet as they struggled to keep pace with the visitors. Although the MinsterMen snuffed out any clear cut chances, South Cave looked more like the team who wanted it most. The pressure got the away side a lead on the twenty minute mark, as a corner was headed in by an unmarked attacker. A few more corner's fizzed across Howden's six yard box who looked to be uneasy with defending the set plays.
McArdle, Wagstaff & Andrew started to dominate and steadily carve open the visitors defensive line. It was youngster John Boardman and Craig Gorman who worked well down the right, firing across for the arriving Douthwaite to hammer home the parried effort.
In the Second half Howden came flying out of the blocks and dominated possession. The game wasn't as free flowing as Howden would have liked as the match official was strict with his decisions, causing a stop start game. A turning point happened on the hour mark a South Cave player was dismissed for kicking the ball away and dissent.
Howden were already struggling to find space, they found it even harder now as Cave put every man behind the ball, absorbing the pressure. Dave McMahon, Luke Caldwell and Rob Peterson all entered the action in effort to grab that much desired goal.
Howden found themselves vulnerable to the counter, as Cave broke, Scott Gorman pulled off a great one on one save to keep Howden level. Yet again the MinsterMen's set piece problems proved costly, as a free man hit home 6 yards out from the resulting corner.
With ten minutes to go, Howden pressed and pressed yet couldn't get level. McArdle, Caldwell, Andrew all firing wide. Deep into stoppage time Rob Peterson found his way into the box, who dummied, hitting home with his left foot into the bottom corner to send the home crowd into cheers. A much deserved point as Holt described it as opposed to two points dropped. "The game was pretty dull. 6 bookings, all for niggles and frustration. In the situation we were in, it's a point gained". Man of the Match went to Josh Oldridge who was sweeping up any South Cave attacks.
