Match report

5 Star MinsterMen blow Rapid away

Back in league action and back in the win column, Howden AFC recorded a comfortable victory to put a season double over Rapid FC. Holt's men have recorded victories in all four encounters between the sides. With five different goalscorer's, Howden AFC once again showed their attacking force.  Howden's line up saw a few returning faces from injury as Liam Bell and Alex Wagstaff were called into the midfield with Oliver McArdle. John Boardman started the game on the right with Craig Gorman and Sam Westerman up front. Damien McMahon made his home debut. Howden battered Rapid FC last month as Danny Wright oversaw a 7-2 victory in Hull.  Rapid FC had revenge on their minds and began the game at a quick tempo. Within the first five minutes they took the lead following the striker poking home unopposed. Howden looked like they had only just got out of bed, never mind playing a football match. Soon though the MinsterMen got into their groove as John Boardman began to find his rhythm. The tricky wide man got in behind the full back a couple of times to see his crosses cut out by the visiting centre halves.   Rapid's physical approach began to draw fouls as Howden were too quick for the Hull based side. Any slight late challenge was brought back for a free-kick and McArdle did deliver a few dangerous balls, unfortunately Howden didn't take advantage. Craig Gorman rattled the cross bar from 20 yards from a direct free-kick.   Rapid continued to try take lumps out of the home side, especially Wagstaff. The midfielder felt the full force of a kick in the back whilst grounded from a trip, Rapid's player received a booking. The tide soon started to turn in favour of the home side. Young Boardman was at it again down the right flank, this time his cut back found Wagstaff 18 yards out, who buried home the equaliser.   More rash challenges came in on the home side and Rapid continued to aim their attention to the match official. Howden played their game and maintained composure.  At Half-time, one a piece. Holt reminded his side not to stoop to their level, continue to play their own game. Which the MinsterMen began to do impressively.   Bell, Douthwaite and Westerman became more involved in the second half, running with the ball, looking to carve the opening. Duly it came on the 50 minute mark as a Westerman corner was dropped by the keeper, allowing Craig Gorman to tap home.   Westerman then netted after some positive build up by the home side who slid through the pacey forward. A ice cool finish into the bottom corner had the home crowd bouncing.   Rapid, still mainly focused on the referee, grabbed a goal back with half an hour to go as Jackson dropped a looping cross when challenged, allowing the striker to poke home. Holt introduced fresh legs as Kerr, Peterson and Schofield replaced Bell, Douthwaite and Westerman respectively.   Holt urged his side to not sit on 3-2 and push for more, that they did. Kerr began to keep the ball ticking over nicely for the home side and Peterson steadied the play out wide. 16 year old Schofield rattled the crossbar with his first touches as he swivelled and hit a 20 yard effort onto the frame of the goal.   Howden won a penalty decision when the Rapid defender blocked an effort with his hand. Despite Rapid's appeals, the decision stood. Up stepped Damien McMahon who powered the ball home. Again more breathing space for the home side, but there was still one more moment of magic to happen.  Sam Schofield broke through on goal to the edge of the box. The young attacker delicately lifted his effort over the keeper and into the bottom corner to cap off a astute attacking display from the MinsterMen. Sour scenes at the end of the game, as Rapid began to target the match official. Take nothing away from the MinsterMen though, a resounding win.  "We were good today. We took a while to get going. The midfield three all had knocks going into this game and they pulled us through. We showed as an attacking unit, we are a force to be reckoned with". said a delighted Holt after the game. The Bowmans man of the Match went to John Boardman who dazzled in the first half on the right.
