Match report

"Casual" Howden let lead slip

Late heart break for Howden, as Driffield managed to nab a last minute leveler at the school to take a point home back to Driffield. Howden ran riot in the first half but could only find the net twice, proving that unless they finish teams off, they're always going to be suspect.
A couple of tweaks to the line up saw Peterson, Gilmartin & Andrew return to the starting XI. In control, Howden rolled the ball amongst the players in a confident fashion. A quick tempo saw Peterson find himself in the final third a few times, only to be let down by his final ball, showing a slight rustiness due to recent absence. Howden kept up impressive ball retention though and progressed through Driffield's shaky midfield.
McMahon, Hutchinson & Munday looked untroubled at the back and began attacks comfortably. Jackson was relitavley a bystander in the first half with having little to do but fetch clearances and goal kicks. Peterson fired a dangerous cross field ball which whizzed past the visitors goal, lacking a poke home.
Wagstaff began to find space and time on the ball, looking impressive as the half went on. The attacking midfielder tried sliding through Westerman a couple of times, who was flagged a dubious offside. Westerman received a booking for his dissent. The striker did manage to set the MinsterMen on their way however. The striker picked up the ball on the half way line, a cheeky nutmeg leaving the defender a clean pair of heels as the forward raced through to goal. Sliding into the bottom corner giving the keeper no chance, netting his 3rd goal of the season.
Howden continued to dictate the play with ease and it wasn't long before top scorer Craig Gorman added a goal which oozed class and skill. Gorman picked the ball up and skipped passed two challenges. To beat the other man he played a neat little one-two with Wagstaff before entering the box to clinically fire home Howden's second.
Holt asked his boys to step up a gear and really put it to Driffield in the 2nd half, who have shown a history of comebacks this season.
But the home side still remained in cruise control. Wagstaff could have had a goal but his effort was well blocked. Westerman also flashed wide. As time grew on, Howden began to settle for the two goal cushion, where as Driffield saw a route into the game. Bell replaced Gilmartin in the middle of the park. The midfielder should have buried his header from an Andrew corner but his effort flew over.
Kerr & Schofield replaced Wagstaff and Peterson, but the impetus was with Driffield. Pushing hard and Howden looked to step off. The visitors made it 2-1 when Howden were poorly organised defending a corner, a near post header beat Jackson.
20 minutes to go and Boardman hobbled off after a skewed shot, caused an ankle problem. Down to 10, stuck in first gear. Everything was pointing to a Driffield equaliser, much to the annoyance of the management on the touchline.
And duly so, with the last kick of the game, a long throw which Jackson punched half clear was looped in to the top corner from an 18 yard header. Distraught for the home side who will be questioning what happened. A real Jekyll and Hyde performance.
"We looked poor in that second half. The poorest we've been all season. It feels like a defeat. We've remained unbeaten, but we won't be much longer if we lack fight like that." said a disheartened Holt. "We have to put it right next week at Hessle, we set our own standards, today we didn't live up to them".
Bowmans Man of the Match went to Damien McMahon who commanded throughout.
