Match report

Flukey in Ferriby

The MinsterMen edged a gritty, back and forth affair with North Ferriby to record a season double over the local rivals. With the option to postpone or play in Brough, Holt took his men on their travels, recording a big victory.
The manager, who had a strong squad at his disposal, was intent on having the game go ahead with the aim of closing the gap on the leaders to two points. And the MinsterMen duly delivered with a hard working performance.

Howden lined up in with only a few changes to the side that played Driffield two weeks ago. Josh Oldridge reverted to left back in the absence of Hutchinson. Oliver McArdle returned into the midfield and Luke Oldridge took up a berth on the right hand side. Chris Ramsden was named on the bench after some impressive displays for the Reserves.

Howden couldn't have asked for a better start as they took the lead within 90 seconds from kick off. Westerman gained yards down the left hand side before picking out Gorman centrally. The striker cut inside his defender and hit an effort to the goalkeepers near post. The keeper managed to tip the shot onto the post, but it wasn't enough as the ball was in the net for Gormans 11th goal in as many games this season.

Ferriby didn't know what hit them so early on. Howden were in dreamland. Instead of pressing on though, Howden seemed to take their foot off the gas. Ferriby started to ask questions with some direct play which caused Howden problems. Howden looked a little shaky at the back, especially in the air. Putting themselves under pressure by giving away soft free kicks, the MinsterMen started making it hard for themselves.

With ten minutes to go until half-time, Ferriby found a way back into the game as the striker snuck in and latched onto a loose pass, rounding Jackson tapping home into an empty goal. Level pegging at half time and Holt knew he and his players needed to up the levels in the second half.

Howden again struggled to dictate any sort of play, not retaining possession in a way they know they can. Ferriby were first, second and third to the battle in the air. McArdle however, was giving the opposition no sign of breathing as he was covering every blade of grass. Constant pressure seemed to lift the MinsterMen.

Peterson replaced L.Oldridge and Schofield entered the action for Westerman. Howden had won themselves a corner, which Andrew delivered in. Liam Bell rose highest, cleverly flicking the ball into the roof of the net. A well worked goal, against the run of play lifted the MinsterMen.

Schofield got himself in on the action, showing why the 16 year old is one to watch this season. Cutting inside and firing a stinging shot towards goal from 20 yards. Perhaps the keeper could have done better with the effort, taking nothing away from Schofield. 3-1 up and Howden had room to breathe.

Or they thought so, immediately from the restart Ferriby pulled back another goal. The striker raced through onto a ball over the top to fire home and tighten it back up, making it just one goal between the sides. It was a back to the walls job for the MinsterMen now who had five minutes to see out the result.

Long throw ins, direct free kicks and corners were swung in and Howden battled hard to defend. With the last kick of the game, Ferriby swung in a corner which was headed against the woodwork. Riding their luck Howden recorded a boosting win, closing the gap on the league leaders to two points.

"We can count ourselves lucky today. We've not performed the best and we've managed to come away with all the points. It's a positive result but there is work to be done." said Holt. "We did well to retain the lead and it's a massive three points".

Oliver McArdle was awarded man of the match for the MinsterMen as he was the heartbeat in the midfield. Long Riston are up next for Howden AFC who will look to record another season double.
