Match report

Humbled in Hessle.....Again

Howden AFC suffered defeat for the second time this season, at the hands of a solid outfit from Hessle. The MinsterMen never clicked together for long enough and paid the ultimate price for trying to rest on a one goal lead.
Holt made one change to the side which beat North Ferriby a fortnight ago. Rob Peterson started in place of an absent Luke Oldridge. John Boardman, Sam Schofield and a returning Wagstaff made up a pacy bench.

Hessle United knew a victory would see them leapfrog the visiting side and they appeared to want the game more than Howden. Retaining possession well and utalising the space at South Hunsley, Howden were chasing shadows for a lot of the time.

Howden failed to put passes together, and were not good enough with the ball. Hessle United still couldn't create any clear chance and Jackson was a spectator in the goal. Howden showed glimpses but the attacking unit of the MinsterMen didn't get going, looking sluggish in the process.

Hessle netted a fortunate goal with ten minutes before the end, after a mix up between the defence and Jackson. Indecision and a lack of command for a split second cost the visitors. However chasing the lead wasn't undeserving. Howden had for the second time this season, rolled up to a Hessle team expecting to win.

Some much needed half time words seemed to lift Howden who came out a much better outfit. McArdle picked the ball up and dribbled 20 yards before sliding through Gorman, who finished aplomb. Ten Minutes later the visitors were at it again and attacked down the side of Westerman, who cut back for Bell to hit home his second goal in consecutive weeks.

The mentality of Howden changed, as they began to sit off again. Not applying pressure to Hessle, they allowed the home side a way back in. Schofield, Boardman & Wagstaff all entered the action to provide a fresh injection of pressing. But Hessle weren't finished.

Howden should have had their third, but they overcomplicated in the box and lost the ball. Hessle countered quickly, bagging a one on one to bring it level. Still Howden didn't press and it was Hessle who wanted it more. Another soon flew in as Munday was outnumbered down the right. The wingers cross was headed home from 6 yards out. Sealing the deserved victory for Hessle.

"We shot ourselves in the foot again" said Holt. "We've expected to win. We need to learn to kill games off and show no remorse. We need to learn it quick before it's too late. The lads are angry and I expect to see a much better performance next time out".

Howden's Working Mens Club sponsor the MinsterMen man of the match went to Josh Oldridge, who was the best of a bad bunch.
