Match report

It was league cup action on Saturday at the school as Howden bowed out at the first hurdle against unbeaten opposition in East Riding Rangers.
A late resurgence wasn't enough for the MinsterMen who crashed out 4-2 respectfully.

Howden were forced to make 3 changes following last weekends beating of Little Weighton. Webster replaced Damien McMahon, Hutchinson replaced Butterill and Boardman replaced Rothery. Kieran Boardman and youngster Alex Haines made the bench for the home side.

Howden pressed hard in the opening to disposes the Premier League side and worked tirelessly off the ball. But when in retention, the home side were slightly careless in the final third. Adam Bell struggled due to a heavy night before hand. The back line of the MinsterMen was strong and dealt very well with the direct approach of the visitors.

Riding grabbed the opener on the half hour mark, as a optimistic cross was kept in well by the right back. His cut back was headed home by the striker. A reminder that if the home side switch off, they get punished. The visitors began to tire and Howden's work ethic was shining through. Still the final ball for Howden was lacking. Boardman got into some inviting areas but options were limited and no chances were conjured up.

Just before half time the visitors doubled their lead with a spectacular and somewhat fortunate goal. Andrew won the header from the goal kick, however the wide man hit a half volley all of 25 yards out in to the top of the goal, leaving Scott Gorman grounded.

Howden came out in the second half with much better urgency and kept the ball better. East Riding began to get frustrated with the official but Howden played their own game. Still no attacking threat, Riding were comfortable at the back. For all Howden's dominance, it was East Riding who grabbed the third goal of the game. This time the striker picked up the ball off a throw in and cut inside, unleashing a great strike from the edge of the box. Gorman couldn't get down to the corner. Holt won't have been happy with his side as they found themselves 4 down within 4 minutes as the ball was given away cheaply from the restart.

Holt brought Haines on for A.Bell and the youngster made an instant impact. Closing down he managed to race through onto the block, sliding past the keeper, recording the clubs fastest debut goal, 30 seconds.
Kieran Boardman replaced Hutchinson at full back and Howden began to press.

More frustration on the visitors part as the game turned petty. A few off the ball niggles occured and both sides began to wind each other up. Munday recieved a booking as did the East Riding wide man.

Craig Gorman scored a brilliant solo goal as the forward carried the ball from a throw in down the bye line and managed to smash across from what seemed an impossible angle. Howden pushed but the whistle blew and the home side found themselves out of the league cup at the first stage for the third year running.

"It's disappointing to go out. We gave a very good effort with limited options. The side showed we can mix it with the better teams in the league above". said Holt. Man of the Match was awarded to vice captain Ash Andrew (pictured) who dominated the visitors forward line and led from the back. Next up in Senior Country Cup action is Hodgsons AFC at the school, this Saturday.
